The On-Liners Youth Club
The On-Liners are a group of young people aged 10-16 who meet once a fortnight for food, fun, Bible
teaching and prayer. They also enjoy the occasional social evening together such as ten-pin bowling or a
'video and popcorn' night.
Many members of On-Liners have no regular experience of going to Church, but they have had links to our
Church through our annual Summer Holiday Club. Here many of our youngsters made a decision to become
followers of Christ. In our youth group setting we are aiming to teach them how being a Christian can
effect how you live your life. That's why we're called 'On-Liners' because we're all about finding out how
to live 'on-line' with God's will. We aim to give Biblical guidelines on life, but each individual is of
course free to make up their own mind and choices.
On-Liners began because our children keep growing up! Some members have been coming to our Summer
Holiday Club since they were 5 years' old. We could see that they were hungry for God but that the
children's work was no longer enough for them. A Church prayer night further confirmed our conviction that
there was a need we had to meet. We held our first meeting in September and have been going strong ever
since.
On-Liners is a truly team effort! Our youth workers are Andy Blurton and Christine Taylor. Anne Vesse
forms the link to the children's work, and Debbie Swain thinks up a lot of 'wacky' games. The youngsters
are also expected to take responsibility by helping to clear up, and even occasionally by bringing the
food.
On-Liners complete a registration form which is signed by their parents. They agree that the youngsters
will abide by the club rules which are built around mutual respect for each other. On-Liners meet once a
fortnight on a Sunday evening from 6-8pm. Current meeting dates can be obtained from the Church office or
by using the contact form on this web site.. Each time the On-Liners meet they pay a small fee of £1. This
pays for the food and any small equipment expenses. Also 10p from every £1 is donated to a charity of the
youngsters choosing. Any extra money is saved towards subsidising our social events. Currently we are
saving towards an outing to lazer quest.
At On-Liners we are keen to teach our young people that we all have a responsibility for our world. In
the autumn we saved our 10ps up to give to Sight Savers - a third world charity. Several of the young
people were keen to increase the amount we gave so it was decided to hold a coffee, cakes and games
afternoon. The youngsters baked cakes, devised games and helped set up and run the afternoon. In the
event we raised a magnificent £165 for Sight Savers. We did, of course use Fair Trade tea and coffee!
This wasn't a one-off. We are planning a barbecue for the summer when we hope to raise money for the
many African Aids orphans.
