holiday club, ilkeston, elim church

For the past seven years the centre has run a children's holiday club for primary school aged children. In order to make the numbers manageable we originally offered the club to just infant school aged children. However, many of the children have enjoyed the club so much that they have kept coming and we now actually have as many junior school aged children as infants.

The clubs have all used materials created by the Scripture Union that are fun and educational, but also very adaptable to our own circumstances. The morning begins with registration followed by lively worship songs and actions. We then watch a video, and there follows a specific Christian teaching. We teach the children how to pray, how to listen to God by reading the Bible and how to enjoy God in our relationships with one another.

The morning ends when all the groups gather together again in the school hall for a sharing of activities they have done. Parents usually gather at the back of the hall at this time to get a 'taster' of the morning. The children are then dismissed and a worker is on-hand to ensure that the children leave with their parent or carer.

The club is organised and run by a qualified and practicing teacher of primary aged children. All the workers are volunteers and many have helped with all the clubs. Several come from other churches in the area and we are very grateful for their input as we couldn't run the club without them. All workers are checked by references and this year we are also police-checking our workers in-line with both the Government's 'Good Practice' advice and the Church's own advisory body, the CCPAS. We are registered with Ofsted and we have a qualified first-aider on our team.

The club accepts all children who wish to come along and learn more about God. We will do our very best to accommodate children who have special educational needs but you do need to alert us to their needs upon registration so that we can arrange special care/adult support as necessary. Obviously, we are dependant on the goodwill of our volunteers and may not be able to accommodate every kind of disability.

If your children attend Granby Junior School or Charlotte Infants School you will automatically hear about the club by letter during the second part of the Summer term. If you live locally but your children attend schools elsewhere, you can still register them for the club. Please send an e-mail to Pastor Richard Taylor with your children's names, date-of-birth, your home address and telephone number. We will then make sure we contact you with further details.

We are sorry but we are legally unable to register any children for the club who are not yet statutory age.
